Origins:

One line of thinking is that rug hooking started in Yorkshire England, early in the 19th century.
Workers in weaving mills were allowed to collect pieces of yarn about 9 inches (23 cm) long.
These small pieces were useless to the mill, so the weavers took them home and pulled them through a backing, thus making a floor mat.

The more traditional methods of the craft as we know it today developed in North America, specifically New England and the Canadian Maritimes.
Women would create their own or follow patterns passed down to them, and would either while away the evenings in their own homes or go to something similar to a quilting bee to be with others.

If you fancy having a go then why not start with a Kit, having everything you need to get you off and rolling.
Or if you want to decide your own colors and backing try a Pattern only.
